Transect is an ongoing exploration of how I observe landscape. I often record short videos while moving through a place, using them as visual notes rather than images to reproduce directly. Those observations become fragments of color, atmosphere, movement, and spatial relationships in the work.
Living in Hawaiʻi, I experience landscape as something continually shifting through weather, elevation, vegetation, and conditions of light. I am interested in systems of observation and measurement, and in the tension between those systems and a place that resists fixed definition.
The idea of the transect grows from that tension. Individual paintings are brought together in selected groupings, suggesting partial lines of observation through a changing landscape. Rather than describing a place completely, each grouping offers one route through something larger, changing, and never fully knowable.
